2018 Republican Party Activism Preview

There are multiple opportunities for activism coming up in 2018. This is an overview of some key dates to mark on your calendar.

  1. Republican Primaries on March 6th, 2018
    What to do:
Get ready to stand at the exit polls and sign people up to the AATX list and advocate for abolition.
    Why:
A big part of our strategy is applying pressure to the legislature via mailers, emails, phone calls, and faxes. In order to this, we need people. People to make phone calls. People to send emails. People to pay for mailers. etc. By rallying the people we can pressure legislatures to truly abolish abortion and not merely regulate it. We need LOTS of people so this is a critical part of our long term strategy. Showing up to the Republican polls is a great way to meet people who are against abortion and wish it to end. We want to recruit those people to help us.
  2. Republican Party Precinct Conventions
    What to do:
Attend your location voting precinct convention meeting, submit the resolution to abolish abortion, and become a delegate to for your precinct to the County/SD convention.
    Why:
A precinct meeting is where you can become a delegate to your County or Senate District (SD) convention for your voting precinct. It is also where you can submit resolutions that you want to be submitted at the county/SD convention. This is a necessary step if you wish to participate in #3 – #4. Usually this meeting is on election day right after the polls close. Sometimes it is held on an alternate date. It is up to the county party to decide when they are holding this convention so you need to get in contact with your local party now and start attending their meetings so you can determine the proper date to show up at your precinct convention.
  3. Republican Party County or Senate District (SD) Conventions on March 24, 2018
    What to do:
Attend your County/SD convention, submit the resolution to abolish abortion, and become a delegate to for your SD at your County/SD convention.
    Why:
By the rules of the RPT (1)Rule No. 27A – Date, Time and Place for County and Senatorial District Conventions (Permanent State Executive Committee Rule)
County and Senatorial District Conventions shall be held on the third Saturday after general primary election day. However, if that date occurs during Passover or on the day following Good Friday, the conventions shall be held on the next Saturday that does not occur during Passover or is not the day following Good Friday. The County Executive Committee in each county shall set the hour and place for convening County and Senatorial District Conventions in that county.
your county/SD convention will take place on March 24th for 2018. The start time is usually in the morning but it will be set by your County/SD leadership. If you became a delegate to this convention by attending your precinct convention, then you can participate in the process and submit resolutions and do other local party business.
  4. Republican Party State Convention on June 11th – 16th, 2018
    What to do:
Attend the state convention and advocate for the abolish abortion legislative priority.
    Why:
The State Convention is where much of the state Party’s business is handled every two years. This is where republicans set their policy for advancing Texas’ legislative policy for the upcoming legislative session. We will be submitting resolutions to our county/SD conventions calling for the abolition of abortion to be a legislative priority again, but we must follow this up by actually attending the state convention and participating the process and urging the committees to move forward the resolutions all the way into the party platform. By doing this, we get the RPT

All of these steps provide us many opportunities to speak to people about the cause of abolition and to seek to influence them to be involved with what we’re seeking to accomplish in Texas.
